UNITED COUNCIL OF VIETNAMESE IN THE HOMELAND AND OVERSEAS

STATEMENT ON THE “NATIONAL DAY” OF SEPTEMBER 2

“NATIONAL DAY OR NATIONAL HUMILIATION?”

Considering that:

Every year on September 2, the Communist Party of Vietnam organizes grand ceremonies calling it “National Day,” the “Independence Declaration Day,” or the day of the “birth of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam.” This year, the communists call it the “80th anniversary of the founding of the DRV.” Before that, on August 19 every year, the Communist Party of Vietnam propagates the so-called “August Revolution” or “Autumn Revolution,” which then leads up to this September 2. But what is the truth?

During the context of the Second World War (1939–1945), Nazi Germany defeated France in Europe; Japan overthrew France in Indochina on March 9, 1945, thereby ending 60 years of colonial rule in Vietnam and Indochina.

  • On March 11, 1945, Emperor Bảo Đại declared the abolition of the Patenotre Treaty of 1884 and established the Empire of Vietnam, independent from French colonialism.
  • On April 17, 1945, the Trần Trọng Kim government was established, composed of young, talented, and enthusiastic ministers. Despite hardships, they achieved many good results. Scholar Trần Trọng Kim was a respected educator, historian, and patriot, with no personal ambition, wishing only for national independence.
  • On August 15, 1945, Japan surrendered after the United States dropped two atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. From then, both French colonialism and Japanese fascism were eliminated from Vietnam’s political scene.
  • On August 17, 1945, in Hanoi, the Civil Servants’ General Association organized a demonstration in support of the Trần Trọng Kim government, but the Việt Minh (communists in disguise) hijacked the stage and turned it into a demonstration supporting the Việt Minh. This was an open “seizure of power” in broad daylight.
  • On August 19, 1945, the Việt Minh mobilized people from the outskirts of Hanoi to demonstrate and support the “Việt Minh National Salvation Front,” and then occupied the Resident-Superior’s Palace. In reality, August 19 was simply the day the Việt Minh usurped power from the legitimate Trần Trọng Kim government.
  • On August 23, 1945, the Việt Minh forced Emperor Bảo Đại to abdicate, even though the government he had formed was legitimate.
  • On September 2, 1945, the Việt Minh staged a rally at Ba Đình Square. Hồ Chí Minh read a “Declaration of Independence,” essentially copied from the U.S. Declaration of Independence. The communists proclaimed this as the “founding of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam” and imposed it upon the nation. Today, Vietnam is called the “Socialist Republic of Vietnam,” a meaningless construct.

The harmful acts of the Việt Minh and Hồ Chí Minh against the nation of Vietnam:

  • Seized power in the manner of a proletarian revolution. Deceived patriots into following the Việt Minh. Murdered those who did not follow communism. Brought Marxism-Leninism into Vietnam and monopolized political power.
  • Forced Emperor Bảo Đại to abdicate, compelled the members of the Trần Trọng Kim government to resign. Used ruthless means to usurp authority.
  • Betrayed the Allied plan to disarm Japanese forces, creating an opportunity for the French to return to Vietnam to replace the Chinese Nationalist Army. This dragged the nation back into unnecessary “scorched-earth” warfare, while other countries gained independence without bloodshed.
  • Ultimately, under orders of Communist International, expanded communist totalitarian dictatorship in Vietnam until today. The Communist Party of Vietnam remains subservient to its master, Communist China, to maintain power and suppress the Vietnamese people.

In view of these facts, the United Council of Vietnamese in the Homeland and Overseas declares firmly:

  1. August 19, 1945 was not a “revolution” but merely a day of power seizure; September 2 was not Vietnam’s national day, but only a date staged and imposed by the Communist Party of Vietnam.
  2. The entire of Vietnamese people does not accept this so-called “national day,” and must rise to establish a truly democratic government, chosen by free elections, with international supervision and recognition.
  3. We appeal to the free world to support the Vietnamese people in building a truly democratic, prosperous, and non-communist nation.
